436The Funeral Trade’s Changed a Lot — But Grief Hasn’t I’ve been a Funeral Director for nearly ten years now. Back when I started, most funerals followed a fairly traditional script. Church service, hearse, cemetery or crematorium, then sandwiches and tea in a local hotel. But things are different now. Some families still want that — and there’s nothing wrong with it — but more and more are choosing something else: woodland burials, colourful coffins, playlists instead of hymns. I’ve helped families create memorial videos and livestream funerals for loved ones who couldn’t travel. I’ve placed ashes into fireworks and scattered them out at sea. More and more, people want something personal. Something that reflects the life lived, not just the fact that it’s ended. And honestly? I think that’s a really good thing. But for all the changes in how we do funerals, one thing hasn’t changed, and that’s grief. Grief is still the same. Grief is stubborn. It’s heavy. It’s strange. It doesn’t follow a plan. And no matter how many funerals I’ve helped with over the years, I’ll never pretend to know exactly what someone is going through. Every loss is personal. Every person’s grief is different.
