If death occurs at home
When a Death Occurs at Home
When someone dies at home, it can be an upsetting and uncertain time. Knowing what to do can help make things feel a little more manageable.
If the death was expected, the first step is to contact the deceased’s GP. If this happens outside normal surgery hours, you should contact NHS 24 by dialling 111.
A doctor or qualified healthcare professional will attend to confirm the death. This may take some time, particularly during evenings, weekends or busy periods.
Once the death has been confirmed, you can contact Ian Johnston Funeral Directors. We are available 24 hours a day and will guide you through the next steps, attending the home when you feel ready.
In most cases, the doctor will complete the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD) and send this directly to the registrar, allowing you to proceed with registering the death.
If the death was sudden or unexpected, or if the person has not been seen by a doctor recently, it may be necessary to contact the police. In these circumstances, Police Scotland may refer the death to the Procurator Fiscal, who will advise on the next steps.
We understand how difficult this time can be, and we are here to support you with care, guidance and reassurance whenever you need us.
